How to apply toner without cotton pad or cotton ball. How do you do it? Why do you do it? Instead of pouring the toner on a cotton pad or cotton ball, you would spray a fine mist all over your face and neck.
What is a toner?
Toners were first used to:
-re establish the pH of the skin since most people used to wash their face with old fashioned soap.
-remove soap residue from the face
Most toners were primarily made up of witch hazel and/or alcohol so it would strip the acid mantle from the skin and would commonly dry out the skin.
NOW, most formulations of toners are made to :
-re establish the pH of the skin for specific skin types ( reduce inflammation of sensitive skin, regulate sebum production in oily skin, etc)
-increase hydration of skin
Toners still come in two varieties:
-With cotton application
-Spray
Spray Toner vs Cotton Based Toner:
Cotton based Toner:
Cotton based toners can drag the skin when used on a daily basis
Waste more product, pouring it onto the cotton ball, more product is soaked on the cotton ball than applied on your face.
The “dirt” that you see on the cotton ball, especially in the morning is NOT usually dirt but oxidized oil.
Typically, the older generation likes to apply toner this way, when the spray toner would be a much better application method for drier skin types.
Spray Toner:
-Use less product, less waste
-More even application
-Increases hydration of the skin
-**Clinical studies have shown an improvement of hydration levels of the skin :
How to Treat Dry and Dehydrated Skin: Do this ONE THING
Do I need to use a toner?
Toners can really help the skins ability to hold onto hydration to avoid oily skin from over producing oil, which can then lead to break outs, balancing out combination skin, and really helping out dry skin hold onto moisture.
Toners are often neglected part of the skin care routine.
How to apply toner for oily, break out prone and acne skin:
Toners can really help reduce oily shine, and reduce the formation of acne break outs since the acne causing bacteria feeds of the oil. Less oil, less break outs.
There are so many toners that are now created for break out prone skin. The tricky part is finding one that works well with the acne control products that they are already using.
If you are using serums that are specifically for acne control, apply that on CLEAN, DRY skin and let it dry.
Spray the toner after the treatment serums have set and while your skin is still moist, apply your sunscreen or lotion.
Spot treatment always goes on LAST.
How to Apply Toner when using treatment serums (anti aging, acne, hyper pigmentation)
To increase absorption rate of the treatment serums and NOT dilute the formulations:
EXFOLIATE: Make sure you use an designated exfoliating product (so NOT an exfoliating cleanser) a good example would be this one product:

How to apply toner if only using Hyaluronic Acid Serum;
You would basically do the same thing in terms of cleansing and exfoliating BUT instead allowing the serum to dry, IF the HA serum does NOT have any other anti aging ingredients in it and it is basically a HA serum, just for hydration, then YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT for the serum to dry.
Hyaluronic Acid loves water, it is drawn to water so if your skin is moist, then it will bind to the toner that contains other humectants to provide a hydrating “film” on your skin.
So, after exfoliating your skin, apply the Hyaluronic Acid serum liberally, and WHILE your skin is still moist, then spray the toner liberally and AGAIN while your face is still moist, apply your sunscreen and moisturizer. This will seal in the moisture.
